Tiles

The Dutch painters are world famous for the landscape painting. From my childhood I loved the  romantic pictures of the Netherland countryside and was fascinated by the realistic portrayal of the nature. On the paintings I always specially admired the sky and the clouds, from which you can “feel”  the weather, the sun or the upcoming storm.
In my collection I wanted to design something practical, something that brings the art to our daily life and I have decided upon tiles. I have chosen painting Shipwreck off a Rocky Coast, Wijnand Nuijen, c. 1837 and an ornamental design from Pattern in black on a white ground; along the cental axis a sylised flower, Daniël Marot (I), 1703 - 1712 from the collection of the Rijks Museum.
I tried to enclose the stormy sky with the strict shapes of the leaf.  I designed tiles, where the rough clouds are transformed to soft and warm colors of the background and the dynamic is left only in the leaf shapes.
